The media server install in very similar to a Master Server Installation. It uses the same install binaries, but gets configured differently.

Start by logging in to the Media Server and become root

[sjhollist@mediaserver1 ~]$ sudo su –
Password:
[root@mediaserver1 ~]#

Validate that /usr/openv is linked to a file system with sufficient space (create link if needed).

[root@mediaserver1 ~]# ls -al /usr/

Installing NetBackup Enterprise Server version: 7.6.0.1

If this machine will be using a different network interface than the
default (nbumaster), the name of the preferred interface should be used
as the configured server name. If this machine will be part of a
cluster, the virtual name should be used as the configured server name.

The domainname of this machine appears to be "domain.com".
You may choose to use this domainname in your configured NetBackup server
name, or simply use "nbumaster" as the configured NetBackup server name.

Would you like to use "mediaserver1.domain.com" as the configured
NetBackup server name of this machine? [y,n] (y) n

Since we are using a dedicated backup network, we need to use the backup network interface name as the primary NetBackup Server name.

Enter the name of this NetBackup server: mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com

Is mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com the master server? [y,n] (y) N

Answer “N” as is a Media Server (If it was the Master Server you would answer with an "y"). You will then need to enter the name of the Master server using the backup network interface name.

What is the fully qualified name of the master server? nbumaster-bkup.domain.com

Checking network connections.
bp.conf: IP_ADDRESS_FAMILY = AF_INET: default value, no update needed

Sending SIGHUP to inetd process.

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release.

Value NO for the NetBackup Product Improvement Program was saved in bp.conf.

Now you will be asked for the name of the EMM server, which by default should be the same as the Master Server. Verify this is correct, and press “Return”.

Enter the Enterprise Media Manager server (default: nbumaster-bkup.domain.com):

Machine mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com is a media server, and it is not the EMMSERVER.
Converting STREAMS files. This may take a few minutes.

The Install will continue until completed, and then exit.

NetBackup server installation complete.

File /usr/openv/tmp/install_trace.31640 contains a trace of this install.
That file can be deleted after you are sure the install was successful.

Now we will need to edit the “bp.conf” file to add all necessary entries to the server list (and remove the OpsCenter server), and correct the client name.

[root@mediaserver1 NetBackup_7.6.0.1_LinuxR_x86_64]# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/
[root@mediaserver1 netbackup]# vi bp.conf
"bp.conf" 9L, 316C
SERVER = nbumaster-bkup.domain.com
SERVER = opscenter-bkup.domain.com
SERVER = mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com
CLIENT_NAME = mediaserver1.domain.com
CONNECT_OPTIONS = localhost 1 0 2
USE_VXSS = PROHIBITED
VXSS_SERVICE_TYPE = INTEGRITYANDCONFIDENTIALITY
EMMSERVER = nbumaster-bkup.domain.com
HOST_CACHE_TTL = 3600
TELEMETRY_UPLOAD = NO

Change to:

SERVER = nbumaster-bkup.domain.com
SERVER = mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com
CLIENT_NAME = mediaserver1-bkup.domain.com
CONNECT_OPTIONS = localhost 1 0 2
USE_VXSS = PROHIBITED
VXSS_SERVICE_TYPE = INTEGRITYANDCONFIDENTIALITY
EMMSERVER = nbumaster-bkup.domain.com
HOST_CACHE_TTL = 3600
TELEMETRY_UPLOAD = NO

We are now done on the media server. It may be a good idea to re-start the NetBackup daemons at this point, and insure they are running as expected.

Back on the Master Server we need to validate the entries on the EMM database.

[sjhollist@nbumaster ~]$ sudo su –
Password:
[root@nbumaster ~]#
[root@nbumaster ~]# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbemmcmd -listhosts
NBEMMCMD, Version: 7.6.0.1
The following hosts were found:

master           nbumaster-bkup.domain.com
media            mediaserver1.domain.com
Command completed successfully.

You can see here that the media server is listed with its default name, and not its backup interface name. We need to delete this entry and re-add it correctly.

[root@nbumaster netbackup]# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/nbemmcmd -deletehost -machinename mediaserver1.domain.com -machinetype media

Now we need to add the aliases for the Media Server
